Hello! My name is HongJu, and I am currently attending the International School of Kuala Lumpur. I’ve always had a passion for helping the refugee community, and I often browse the UNHCR website to better understand their situation and monitor any progress that has been made. So one day I came across an article that talked about this free refugee clinic in KL that helps refugees obtain better healthcare––especially during the MCO (Movement Control Order). I looked up the address of the clinic and discovered it was situated right in front of my house. I thought ‘what a coincidence!’

From then on, Initiating the Pay Forward system with Global Doctors and UNHCR to aid refugees in obtaining basic healthcare has been a months-long process of passion and perseverance. Being able to reach out to my peers to form a team of passionate and dedicated workers has made this initiative so much easier to pursue! 

Society continues to portray heroes as those with superpowers, those who are fundamentally different from people like us. I believe that heroes are those who take action to support causes like these, and make a change no matter how small. I sincerely hope that there are heroes—like you!—who will step up to financially support the less-fortunate members of our community through Relieve’s Pay Forward system.

Hello:) My name is Dokyoung and I’m currently attending the International School in Kuala Lumpur. I’m honored to join the Relieve team and work with Global Doctors and UNHCR. Our team wishes to provide refugees with a stable  healthcare system—using the Pay Forward system—and support inclusivity of minority groups. 

Since I have worked with refugees for a long time, it was possible to notice that the access to health care for refugees is extremely challenging, and the cost is too high for them to afford it. Recently, COVID-19 has made this situation even worse. I truly believe that the way our society treats refugees is not fair enough.

Such hardships these refugees face in Malaysia inspired me to initiate this whole project. I will not just sit and watch such injustices; through this project, I can actually step in and support the well-being of refugees. I strongly believe that this project could be a good start of opening the door of humanitarianism.

My name is Jimin Lee and I’m currently attending the International School of Kuala Lumpur. I’ve been working with refugees since last year and I realised that many of them don’t have access to proper healthcare. To make it even worse, the Covid-19 pandemic has made refugees financially unstable, as well as restricted them from receiving necessary healthcare services. 

I believe that one’s health cannot be determined by financial status or citizenship. Refugees struggle with poverty not because of bad choices or individual mistakes. They are rather victims of human trafficking and war. I don’t want to let economic disparities affect the well being of refugees. My goal, and Relieve’s goal, is to support a fair and just society where everyone regardless of citizenship, can obtain basic human rights such as healthcare. Our team Relieve is truly happy to support refugees in achieving mental and physical wellbeing.

Hey! My name is Darwisyah, acting as Chief Coordinating Officer of the UNHCR Pay Forward Project in collaboration with Relieve. I have personally worked with refugees at Global Doctors UNHCR Medicare Clinic when it first opened in 2020. During which, I learned how refugees have lived and survived in Malaysia. Although I have only witnessed the tip of the iceberg first-hand, it is without a question that they were dealt with a bad hand. If we have the chance to help them, what’s stopping us?

Global Doctors UNHCR Medicare clinic focuses on bringing affordable medical healthcare to refugees. With Pay Forward, everyone can help lessen the burden of refugees with choosing to pay for their medication or even their blood test. Health care should not be paywalled , it should be inexpensive and easily accessible.
